Software Defined Networking as a solution for dynamic and large-scale network problems (with focus on Internet of Vehicles)
Abstract

The emergence of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) aims to improve our daily safety and comfort road experiences, however, as the number and type of connected objects increase, the quality of service (QoS) linked to the network as well as the quality of experience (QoE) linked to users are deteriorating, which inevitably leads to new unknown behaviors, new uses, and new application possibilities. Traditional network architectures are rigid, difficult to manage, and suffer from scalability issues. These issues are due to a lack of flexibility in network management, and adaptability to the context as required in IoV. These constraints limit the entire IoV system in its functionalities, slow down the creativity and the exploitation of new applications, and lead to the underuse of network resources.

In recent years, the Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm is identified as the most appropriate technology for addressing requirements, supporting gaps and satisfying the needs of IoV and, dynamic and large-scale networks. The SDN architecture proposes, on the one hand, to dissociate physically the control plane from the data plane, and on the other hand, to centralize logically the control and the intelligence of the whole network on one or more software controllers.

This talk focuses on how to effectively adopt the SDN architecture to vehicular networks, to optimize the location of the SDN controllers by positioning them as close as possible to the end-users while keeping them distant from each other, to guarantee the authentication and the trust between the actors of the IoV, and to monitor the consistency of SDN controllers, by taking advantage of SDN architecture, Fog/Edge computing paradigm and distributed ledger technology (DLT) such as the Blockchain. The main goal is to improve QoS and QoE in the new generations of vehicular networks, and to facilitate the deployment of IoV and its services and applications.

Bio

Lylia Alouache received her PhD in Science and Technologies of Information and Communication from CY Cergy Paris University France, and Ferhat Abbas Setif1 University Algeria, in 2019. She also received her Master’s degree in Networks and Distributed Systems from Abdurrahman Mira University, Bejaia, Algeria, in 2015. She is currently an associate professor at CY Tech, CY Cergy Paris University, France, since 2019. Her research interests concern networks and distributed systems analysis, Routing protocols and communications, Software Defined Networking architecture, Security of communication and trust models in wireless AdHoc networks and Internet of Vehicles.
