SUMMARY:HdR defense: Camille Simon Chane
DESCRIPTION:Contributions to acquisition- and data-driven processing for interdisciplinary applications: from cultural heritage towards biodiversity assessment\nAbstract\nThis document presents an overview of my deeply trans-disciplinary research in the field of computer vision from the acquisition to the processing. In particular\, I’ve focused on my contributions to event-based data processing; biomedical image synthesis and segmentation; and insect recognition. \nI have worked on event-processing that is “close to the event”. Contributions from Ozgun Yilmaz post-doc on event-corner detectors paved the way for Laure Acin’s work on event-representations. Her proposition of a end-to-end trainable speed invariant time surface (VK-SITS) proves to be robust while allowing fast inference. I also present a simple saliency model that is highly competitive compared to established visual selection models. The aim of Clara Brémond’s thesis was to help automatize the characterization of brain organoid. These cultures are fairly recent and very little public data is available. We first worked on the generation of synthetic data from a small dataset and evaluated the images through a psychovisual study. Then\, we demonstrated the usefulness of synthetic data to train robust segmentation networks. Species-level classification of blood-sucking Diptera was based on Wing Interference Pattern images. We have demonstrated the efficiency of light networks such as MobileNet in recognizing dipteran species of several families. We have also explored alternative transportable WIP acquisition methods as the ground-work for a full portable WIP-based Diptera recognition system. \nAs I expand my work on insect recognition towards biodiversity assessment\, I will continue to tackle deep-learning problems in a data-centered approach. My longstanding interest in cultural heritage studies will also feed this theme through the fundamental work on mother-of-pearl identification and characterization using macro imaging techniques. \nJury\n\nMme Isabelle BLOCH\, Professeure\, Sorbonne Université\, Paris\, Rapporteure\nM.
