Biography
I studied Electrical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1988, I received my DEA in computer science from the University PARIS VI in 1992, and my Ph.D. from the Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers (CNAM) of Paris, in 1996. I am currently Professor of Computer Science at ENSEA, Cergy. Previously, I have served the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete for 5 years as Associate Professor and 11 years as Full Professor (Professeur grade 1). Between 2019 and 2020, I was fellow in residence (Adjunct Professor) at the Institut d’Études Avancées (IEA), Université CY Cergy Paris. From 2015 to 2019 I have been elected to an advanced research position at INRIA-Paris while from 2013 to 2015 I have worked as a Distinguished Scientist at Technicolor, R&I Center in Paris.
My main research interests span Machine Learning Systems, Data Science and Big Data Computing, Databases and Web Information Systems, as well as Digital Libraries and Scientific Systems. On these topics, I have published 148 articles in leading journals and conferences. My research work was driven by the need to manage, process and analyze post-relational data (semi–or unstructured) in centralized, distributed and streaming settings often in the context of other scientific fields (e.g., Cultural Heritage, Environmental Sciences, Educational Sciences, etc.). My work has received 7000 citations with an h-index 44 according to Google Scholar.
I was a recipient of the 2004 SIGMOD Test of Time Award, and of several best paper awards in ISWC (2003, 2007, 2009). I chaired (General Chair of the EDBT/ICDT Conference in 2014, Area Chair for the “Semi-structured, Web, and Linked Data Management” track in ICDE 2016, Chair of the Web Services Track in SCC 2004, Industrial Track Chair in EDBT 2004) or served on program committees of numerous conferences (VLDB, ICDE, EDBT, WWW, CIKM, etc.) while I have acted as editorial member, or reviewer of several journals (CACM, TODS, TOIS, TOIT, VLDB Journal, TDKE, DPS, etc.). I have also been a keynote or invited speaker in conferences and summer schools (PODS 2003, HDMS 2004, ESWC Summer School 2013, WebST 2016, BDA Summer School 2018).
I have participated in several Scientific Advisory Boards of Higher Education (Greek National Academic Recognition Information Center) or Research organizations (Greek National Science & Technology Council, Research Council of Norway, and National Research Agency of France). I have acted as scientific coordinator of 22 research projects funded by the European Union, the Greek State of the private sector. Finally, I am serving as an elected member the Executive Board (EB) of the Extending Data Base Technology (EDBT) Association and I am member of the ACM (since 2000) and IEEE (since 2020).
Research activities
My research work is structured along the following 4 major axes:
- Machine Learning Systems: Feature Selection Algorithms for High Dimensional Data, Data Diagnosis and Explanation in ML Pipelines, Automated Feature Engineering over Relational Data, Ethical and Transparent Data Engineering and Modeling.
- Data Science and Big Data Computing: Continuous Top-k Queries, Web Scale Entity Resolution, Motif Extraction & Drift Detection in Data Series, Real-Time Anomaly Detection in Data Streams, Aspect-based Text Summarization, Data Quality of Crowd-Measurements.
- Databases and Semantic Web Information Systems: XML/RDF Storage and Indexing Schemes, Semantics-aware Data Models and Query Languages, Heterogeneous Information Integration, XML/RDF Change Management, Graphical Query Interfaces.
- Digital Libraries and Scientific Systems: Personalization and Preference Management, Peer-to-Peer Data and Knowledge Management Systems, Data Flow Systems, Description and Composition of e-services, Data Provenance and Annotation Management.
